What is the Gas Safe Register?
The official list of gas businesses legally allowed to work on gas appliances – and how to check anyone before they work in your home.
Why it matters
By law, anyone working on gas appliances in your home – boilers, cookers, fires – must be on the Gas Safe Register. Badly fitted or poorly maintained gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
How to check an engineer
- Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Check the front and back – the back shows which types of gas work they're qualified to do.
- Check online at gassaferegister.co.uk using the licence number on their card.
- Call the free helpline on 0800 408 5500.
